If you are struggling to get the subs to play, you might like to try this.
Before that is, downloading Codec packs or wading through the answers to the problem that seemingly litter the net like rice at a wedding.
It may not be the most technical of fixes, but it does work, I have tried it numerous times and it resolves the problem.
Bin the original SRT file, and the IDX file if present, and download new subs from an external source. The usual rules then apply, both files requiring the same name, suffixed .avi and .srt accordingly.
First stop for new subs is this subtitle search engine, http://www.free-subtitles.org/
Which invariably, but not exclusively, leads to, http://www.allsubs.org/
