Start A Dialogue With Your Doctor

There are times that the idea of talking to your doctor can make you nervous. Many people, when faced with a roomful of people in medical scrubs find themselves tongue tied and unable to carry on a dialogue. Remember though in order to get proper treatment, you need to speak up and talk with your doctor about your course of treatment and how you're truly feeling. Taking control of your medical needs and the care you're receiving will go a long way in making certain you get the best treatment possible. If worry makes you unable to ask questions, write them down and go down the list with your doctor asking him to explain until you understand what you need to.

The only way you can truly get good care is by speaking up and talking with your doctor. He or she is there to be your partner to make you well. You need to be open and honest and have a frank discussion about your hopes, fears and feelings of pain you may be experiencing. You and your doctor are in a partnership together with the common goal of making you healthy. Don't feel rushed and if you do, be frank and tell your doctor that you're feeling that way and that you need a few more minutes of their time.

Your doctor is fully armed with your medical history when they walk into the room. They are asking you questions based on the information they have at hand, and you need to update them on any changes or medical issues or concerns you may have that aren't on the chart. You need to have your own agenda your own questions answered and you need to feel good about the course of treatment you're receiving. If you think you're going to need a longer than usual office visit time with your doctor, ask for that when you book your appointment. Bottom line, your doctor truly does work for you and you can choose another doctor if you're not happy, but it could be as simple as having a discussion on your feelings when you're in the office.

You're also allowed to disagree with your doctor. If they offer a treatment to which you're opposed, if you don't understand it, or if you have another option that you've heard about you have every right to bring that information up with him and see if it's a viable option for you. If you're having any side effects to any medications, you will want to mention that to your doctor as well. Even a small reaction should be something you bring up.

Initiating a dialogue with your doctor truly is on your shoulders. If you have a lot of medical concerns it might be best to bring a friend or family member along with you to help you keep track of everything.

Questions that were either unanswered or something that you thought about after you left the office, feel free to call him back and ask your questions. You likely won't get put right through to your doctor but chances are they will call you back on a break between patients.
