I have long known of Yogi Berra, the baseball player and coach, and his famous sayings. But for some reason I assumed he was a long-dead figure from early in the last century.
Not a bit of it. He is alive today, aged 89.
To celebrate this welcome news, here are some of the sayings attributed to him:
"If the fans don't come out to the ball park, you can't stop them."
"It's déjà vu all over again."
[On why he no longer went to Ruggeri's, a St. Louis restaurant.]
"Nobody goes there anymore. It's too crowded."
[When asked if a player had exceeded expectations for the season.]
"I'd say he's done more than that."
"You should always go to other people's funerals. Otherwise, they won't come to yours."
