Bugged

Early this morning a flash of movement had me looking up and glancing out the picture window.  I saw her flying around as if trying to get my attention.  Was the lady trying to send me a message?  Light glowed through her tiny transparent wings. Before I could get close to her, she was gone.

The lilacs have blossomed and faded, the peonies are ready to burst forth in all their sweet-smelling glory and the lily shoots are about three inches tall.  Regardless of all this floral fanfare, she was the first ladybug of the spring to present herself to me.  In A Beetle Is Shy (Chronicle Books, April 5, 2016) the newest collaboration between author Dianna Hutts Aston and illustrator Sylvia Long, the Convergent Lady Beetle is one of twenty-eight featured insects.

A beetle is shy.
It begins its life inside an egg...
soft and wingless, tender,
protected by the roots of trees
and the undersides of leaves.

From this quiet beginning the egg changes into a larva four different times, each one larger.  It progresses to the pupa and then to the beautiful beetle.  The variety of color found in beetles likens them to a kaleidoscope if they were gathered together.

If you are exploring in one of several South American locations, you might encounter a beetle as large as your hand. *gulp* Coming up to North America you would need assistance to see one of the smallest known beetles.  It's only three one hundredths of an inch in size.

Beetles are specially equipped to travel, perform their jobs and search for food.  Their legs and toes are designed for a certain purpose; flattened or long and slender or ready for springing up in a leap.  Communication methods rely on smell, sound and light.

To protect themselves beetles can blend in with their surroundings, shoot out harmful substances, and pretend to be something they are not.  They are known to assist in making plants healthier or causing them irreparable damage.

Beetles shared the planet with dinosaurs and have wings acting as shields for their inner flight wings and abdomens.  They are survivors.  They remind us to be thankful for the exquisite creatures sharing this planet with us.


In this title, as in the five previous books, Dianna Hutts Aston showcases a series of statements about beetles.  Some are fairly simple,

A beetle is kaleidoscopic.

Others are a little more complex,

A beetle is helpful...
or harmful.

Following each observation are one or more paragraphs in support of her initial sentence.  In this way we are informed but enveloped in her poetic writing style.  Here is another sample passage, one of eleven with one additional paragraph.

A beetle is telegraphic.
... Fireflies communicate by bioluminescence,
or glowing lights.  They flash their signals
to attract a mate, defend their territory,
and warn away predators.


In this title the watercolor illustrations by Sylvia Long are stunning in their delicacy and detail.  Her bugs are beautiful!  The "wheel" of beetles on the front of the matching dust jacket and book case crosses the spine and a similar form, a partial arc of insects, appears on the back from the center to the upper left-hand corner.  The crisp white background here welcomes our attention to the array of colors to be found on beetles. The opening and closing endpapers are a pattern taken from the outer wings of a beetle; a pale orange with irregular-shaped brown spots.

With a page turn all twenty-eight beetles featured here are pictured on two pages.  At the close of the book, the illustration is identical except each insect is named.  An extreme close-up of two beetles frames the bottom and top of the verso and title pages respectively.  It's a very clever use of their antennae.

Alternating between two-page larger images and single page pictures bordered in white paired with shifting perspectives, Long elevates the text and our appreciation for beetles.  At times an element in her pictures will extend beyond the boundary of the frame.  Each illustration is uniquely different but together they create a splendid portfolio.  Careful readers will notice Long starts and ends the title with the passage of time not only for the beetle but the plant on which it is placed.

One of my favorite pictures is of three Water-gliding Rove Beetles.  We are given a close-up view of them as if we are looking down on the water.  Their movement is shown with shaded hues of blue-green extending from their legs.  A portion of shoreline and overhanging leaves gives us a sense of their size.


Regardless of whether you are a bug-lover or not, A Beetle Is Shy written by Dianna Hutts Aston with illustrations by Sylvia Long is to be valued for the information, writing and exquisite illustrations.  It's a must have for your personal and professional shelves.  You might want to pair it with The Beetle Book by Steve Jenkins.

ASEAN NCAP Q2 2016 results - Nissan X-Trail, Nissan Navara, Suzuki Ertiga, Suzuki Ciaz, Kia Morning, Hyundai EON and Isuzu MU-X


ASEAN NCAP has released the results for another batch of vehicles sold in the ASEAN region. The New Car Assessment Program for Southeast Asian Countries (ASEAN NCAP) announced the test results of seven car models that had been assessed in the second quarter of 2016. The models were Nissan X-Trail, Nissan Navara, Suzuki Ertiga, Suzuki Ciaz, Kia Morning, Hyundai EON and Isuzu MU-X. In the Adult Occupant Protection (AOP) category, two received 0-Star rating, four received 4- Star and one model received 5 Stars. 


The ASEAN NCAP Q2 2016 results are as follows.

 Kia Morning scored 1.48 points which makes it fall under the 0-Star category rating for AOP. For COP (Child Occupant Protection) it received 1-Star with 27%.


 Hyundai EON did not obtain any points at all with 0.00 points. Similar to Kia Morning, EON also only met 27% compliance, which makes fall under 1-Star range.



 Nissan X-Trail received a comfortable score of 15.10 points for AOP assessment in which it was awarded with 5-Star. It also fared well in COP, with 72% compliance, it is in the 4-Star rating.




 Nissan Navara received 4-Star rating with 12.34 points in AOP and as for COP it scored 37% with 2-Star rating.



 Suzuki Ertiga obtained 12.39 points for AOP category, within 4-Star range. For COP, it scored 33% compliance, a rating within 2-Star.




 Suzuki Ciaz scored 14.56 points in AOP that makes achieved 4-Star rating. In COP assessment, Ciaz met 37% compliance, hence it received 2-Star rating.


 Isuzu MU-X result is an extended rating from the existing Isuzu D-MAX. The SUV obtained 11.87 points in which it received 4-Star AOP. As for the COP assessment, it performed slightly better than the tested pickup truck with 73% compliance, a rating within 4-Star category.

Good thing we do not get the ZERO Star cars here in Malaysia (this time it is a good thing high tax and duties do not make it feasible to sell the Kia Morning and the Hyundai Eon here unlike in Indonesia and Thailand).

ASEAN NCAP Announces Two 0-Star Cars at AASF in Vietnam

Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, 31 May 2016 – In conjunction with the fourth edition of ASEAN

Automobile Safety Forum (AASF) 2016 held in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, the New Car Assessment

Program for Southeast Asian Countries (ASEAN NCAP) announced the test results of seven car models

that had been assessed in the second quarter of 2016. The models were Nissan X-Trail, Nissan Navara,

Suzuki Ertiga, Suzuki Ciaz, Kia Morning, Hyundai EON and Isuzu MU-X. In the Adult Occupant

Protection (AOP) category, two received 0-Star rating, four received 4- Star and one model received 5 Star

Kia Morning and Hyundai EON

ASEAN NCAP tested the Kia Morning and Hyundai EON on 14 April 2016 and 10 May 2016,

respectively. The tested variant for Kia Morning was from the Indonesian market whilst Hyundai EON,

the left-hand-drive variant, was from the Philippines. Both of these variants were without airbags and

received 0-Star rating for the AOP category; the Kia Morning scored 1.48 points and Hyundai EON 0.00

points (an absolute zero-star car). For Child Occupant Protection (COP) assessment, both of the

models achieved 1-Star rating at 27% compliance.

Nissan X-Trail and Nissan Navara

The results of two Nissan models were also released during the event; the X-Trail and Navara. With

Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and Seatbelt Reminder System (SBR) for both frontal occupants,

Nissan X-Trail scored 5-Star in AOP assessment with 15.10 points. The Nissan Navara is the sixth pickup

truck assessed by ASEAN NCAP and scored 12.34 points in AOP, falling in the 4-Star range. In the

assessment for COP, the X-Trail successfully met 72% compliance falling in the 4-Star category. The

Navara, however, did not perform as well as X-Trail in COP, with 37% compliance, it received only a 2-

Star rating.


Suzuki Ertiga, Suzuki Ciaz and Isuzu MU-X

ASEAN NCAP crash tested two models from Suzuki in this quarter. Both models, the Suzuki Ertiga and

Suzuki Ciaz obtained 4-Star rating in AOP assessment. The Ertiga, a hatchback, scored 12.39 points

whilst the Ciaz, a C-segment sedan scored 14.56 points. With both models having seatbelts for child

safety attachment method, they were awarded 2-Star in COP assessment; Suzuki Ertiga and Ciaz

respectively met 33% and 37% compliance for COP. ASEAN NCAP also extended the result from Isuzu

D-MAX tested during Phase III in 2013 for Isuzu MU-X. Based on technical evidence provided by Isuzu,

the SUV had comparable occupant protection to the tested D-MAX. MU-X obtained 11.87 points for

AOP, which places it in the 4-Star category. As for the COP assessment, the SUV achieved 4-Star rating

with 73% compliance, an increase from 71% that D-MAX achieved.

ASEAN NCAP Chairman, Prof. Dr. Wong Shaw Voon said:

“As an entry level car, Kia Morning and Hyundai EON are among the popular cars in their respective

countries. In 2014, Kia Morning has a sales volume of 11,000 in the Indonesian market whilst Hyundai

EON, available in the Philippines market, reached a sales number of 4,000. From a total of 74 ASEAN

NCAP ratings, there are about 24 car models that received 5-Star rating, including today’s release. This

has been a great achievement by ASEAN NCAP as the safety ratings have encouraged manufacturers

to improve their vehicles’ safety levels. Hence, we are sad to share that in the history of ASEAN NCAP,

we had a new car in the ASEAN market that failed to score any single point out of 16.00 points

assessment criteria. This is similar to the test conducted by Safer Cars for India project with Global

NCAP in which the same model, i.e. Hyundai EON received 0-Star with similar points at 0.00 from the

maximum of 17.00 points. In the advancement of vehicle safety, vehicles crashworthiness has been

aggressively addressed by automotive industries since 1947. A lot of latest technologies had become

matured and saved thousands and probably millions of lives. With the strong push by the relevant

authorities and the pressure from the consumers, I strongly believe the day where there are no zero-

star vehicles on our road will soon come true.”

ASEAN NCAP Secretary-General, Mr. Khairil Anwar Abu Kassim said:

“The Kia Morning and Hyundai EON, respectively are the second and third 0-Star cars in the history of

ASEAN NCAP, after the non-airbag version of Kia Picanto tested in 2014 for the Thailand market. The

Hyundai EON’s result comes alongside the latest results released for popular Indian cars by Global

NCAP in New Delhi on 17 May 2016. The 0-Star result of the Morning and EON shows it is important

that the cars are not only fitted with at least frontal airbags but it is also crucial that the structure of

the car remain sstable in a crash. This combination is essential to ensure occupant safety. ASEAN NCAP

supports Global NCAP’s campaign on #NOZEROSTARCARS, cars such as these have no place in the

ASEAN market.”Prof. Dr. Wong also added:

“ASEAN NCAP is ready to open to all sectors from government, automotive industries, non-

governmental organizations, consumers and the general public at large to collaborate in elevating the

level of vehicle safety in the region. Under ASEAN Road Safety Centre and Malaysian Institute of Road

use of ASEAN NCAP results and information at various levels including at the policy level of

The ASEAN NCAP Q2 2016 results are as follows.

 Kia Morning scored 1.48 points which makes it fall under the 0-Star category rating for AOP. For

COP it received 1-Star with 27%.

 Hyundai EON did not obtain any points at all with 0.00 points. Similar to Kia Morning, EON also

only met 27% compliance, which makes fall under 1-Star range.

 Nissan X-Trail received a comfortable score of 15.10 points for AOP assessment in which it was

awarded with 5-Star. It also fared well in COP, with 72% compliance, it is in the 4-Star rating.

 Nissan Navara received 4-Star rating with 12.34 points in AOP and as for COP it scored 37% with

2-Star rating.

 Suzuki Ertiga obtained 12.39 points for AOP category, within 4-Star range. For COP, it scored 33%

compliance, a rating within 2-Star.

 Suzuki Ciaz scored 14.56 points in AOP that makes achieved 4-Star rating. In COP assessment, Ciaz

met 37% compliance, hence it received 2-Star rating.

 Isuzu MU-X result is an extended rating from the existing Isuzu D-MAX. The SUV obtained 11.87

pointsin which it received 4-Star AOP. As for the COP assessment, it performed slightly better than

the tested pickup truck with 73% compliance, a rating within 4-Star category.

Sports car news: Renault previews a CLIO R.S. 16 Concept car - This one gets the Megane R.S 275 engine and gearbox.



The Renault Clio RS 16 - Renault has come up with a Concept car as part of its Renault Sport’s 40th anniversary and their return to Formula 1. The Renault Sport Clio R.S.16 Concept grafts the Renault passenger car range’s highest-performing engine (found in the Renault Megane R.S 275) into a Renault Clio R.S. 



Out comes the 1.6liter turbocharged original and in comes a 2.0liter turbocharged engine. 275-horsepower AND 360Nm will make this a truly extreme road car. One more manic and obviously faster than the Megane R.S. which is already a stupendous car to say the least. It also puts in a manual transmission in the Clio R.S which was only available with a dual clutch gearbox. Why? Because the manual was what was found in the Magane R.S. and a lot of Renault Sport purists always had a dream of a Clio R.S. with a manual transmission. If the demand is there, I would not be surprised that this car could be built.


The Clio R.S.16 is to be unveiled at the celebrated Monaco Formula 1 Grand Prix. Monaco’s famous Grand Prix road circuit was chosen for a first look at a new concept car. It will be driven by Renault Sport Formula One Team’s Kevin Magnussen. By choosing Monaco, Renault Sport makes the link between Clio R.S.16 both around circuits and on ordinary roads.

Monte Carlo, 27 May 2016 – Monaco’s famous Grand Prix circuit is the site for a first look

at a new concept car driven by Renault Sport Formula One Team’s Kevin Magnussen

today. By choosing Monaco, Renault Sport makes the link between Clio R.S.16 both

around circuits and on ordinary roads.


Developed in record time

“Our aim was to produce a concept car with genuinely outstanding performance

credentials,” notes Patrice Ratti, Managing Director of Renault Sport Cars, leader of the

project which particularly inspired the development team’s specialists. “On paper,

producing a Clio R.S. powered by our most potent engine – namely the 275-horsepower

two-litre power unit which delivers peak torque of 360Nm – was an extremely appealing

idea, but we had to make sure it was feasible.”

Thanks to new working procedures involving teams from the worlds of motorsport and

road cars, the incubation of the highest-performance road-going Renault Sport car ever

took just five months.

A variety of technical challenges

Finding the ideal way to house the engine, transmission and cooling system of the Mégane

R.S. 275 Trophy-R into the Clio R.S.16 was a significant challenge. The exhaust system

was also revised as a function of the engine’s potential, while the suspension was

engineered to match the car’s outstanding performance characteristics. Careful attention

was paid to the sound produced by the car, too, and an Akrapovič twin exhaust system

was selected.

Performance-led design

The design and development team dealt successfully with the constraints inherent in the

Clio R.S.16 project (body widened by 60mm, 19-inch wheels and optimisation of the

engine cooling system) to produce an expressive, sporty stance. The result is enhanced

by an LED R.S. VISION chequered-pattern lighting signature featuring exclusive multi-

faceted reflector technology.

Renault Sport’s trademark Sirius yellow has been combined with gloss black details to

mirror the livery of Renault Sport Formula One Team’s R.S.16 F1 single-seaters.

After today’s first public airing in the streets of Monaco, the car’s next official appearance

will be the Goodwood Festival of Speed in West Sussex, United Kingdom, on June 23-26.

Apollo Tyres have officially set up shop in Malaysia. The tyre maker, Apollo Tyres Ltd is an international tyre manufacturer with manufacturing units in India and the Netherlands where it is more famous for the Vredestein brand. The company markets its products under its two global brands – Apollo and Vredestein. Apollo would be known to those who have bought the Volkswagen Polo 1.6 hatch and sedan (now Vento). Most of the Polo 1.6's had Apollo tyres fitted on them. This is because we basically received our CKD kits from Volkswagen's plants in India. 


After a successful milestone set in Thailand and Indonesia, Apollo Tyres, the leading tyre major, today has announced their new presence in the Malaysian market with the setting up a new office in Malaysia, Apollo Tyres expands its footprint in South East Asia as they targets to become the leader in the replacement tyre market. The company is building a complete team of sales and service personnel to service the Malaysian customers. It looks like they are keen in entering the lucrative truck and bus replacement tyre market by the looks of things. 

Personally I have tried the Polo hatch with Apollo tyres and they seem to work fine as what they are offering - a decent entry level tyre. If the price for their tyres is right, I think a new player in our tyre market is always a good thing for the consumer. More choice means more competition which means better pricing for the consumer. With that, I welcome Apollo tyres to Malaysia.

Fold By Fold

One of the most fun and funny activities ever year is teaching the entire second grade how to fold a single origami animal.  (During the final weeks of school all classes participate in a storytelling unit.)  The Something Special found within the pages of the wonderful The Story Vine: A Source Book of Unusual and Easy-to-Tell Stories from Around the World by Anne Pellowski with illustrations by Lynn Sweat is one of the tales told to the second grade.

Step-by-step, fold-by-fold the, event-by-event the listeners are lead to a beautiful conclusion and the creation of a distinctive bird.  Before the sound of the final word has faded in the room, every single student wants to make that bird.  Twenty-five (or more) little guys and gals with square sheets of paper and one teacher attempting to help them all is an unforgettable time full of lots of smiles.  Taking it slow and persistence are keys to success.  

In her picture book debut author Dori Kleber portrays a boy with a passion for learning an ancient art.  More-igami (Candlewick Press, May 10, 2016) with illustrations by G. Brian Karas follows a love which turns into a cherished skill.  It's a skill worth sharing.

Joey loved things that folded.

No fold went unnoticed by Joey.  His acquisition of folded items grew.  Awake and asleep this boy was as close to anything folded as he could be.

When a classmate's mother came to school and made an origami crane, Joey's heart nearly burst with joy.  He wanted to be taught to make a crane but he was advised 

you'll need practice and patience.

No piece of paper was safe from Joey's eager, creative hands.  Homework, his sister's violin music, and a special family recipe card were bent into shapes.  When he used dollar bills from his mother's purse, she asked him to stop his folding.  How can you achieve success at origami if you aren't allowed to fold available paper?  

A neighbor, a restaurateur, offers counsel.  Mr. Lopez then notices what Joey's restless hands have made.  After school every day the boy visited Mr. Lopez his hands guided by his heart, until one day he was asked a question.  Joey's reply was an end and a beginning.


Simple enlightening sentences begin the narrative introducing us to Joey.  Dori Kleber uses verbs, collected, played and slept to convey the boy's love of all things folded.  We understand from these why seeing the art of origami demonstrated fills him with the desire to learn.  Kleber's solution to Joey's problem is ingenious.  She also ties beginning moments and concluding moments with the use of repetitive words.  Here is a sample passage.

Joey started that afternoon.  He practiced on his notebook paper and on the construction paper from the art shelf.  But even his simple shapes were crooked and crumpled.


The layout and design of the matching dust jacket and book case are a true reflection of the story.  G. Brian Karas renders all the illustrations using gouache and pencil on paper.  On the front he frames Joey, hard at work, in origami folds.  To the left, on the back, is a triangle-patterned paper in orange and white.  This is used again on the left side of the opening endpapers.  The three remaining portions of the endpapers are different pieces of origami paper, a floral, a stripe and another floral.  The green shapes on the front of the jacket and cover are enlarged in a different green shade as a background on the verso and title pages.  

As a canvas for images throughout the book, Karas continues with lightly colored varied hues with noticeable folds.  Each picture contains, regardless of the background, paper shapes in the elements.  Karas alters his perspective as the story progresses bringing us further emotionally into narrative.  Endearing warmth is in the visuals due to the facial expressions of each character.  

One of my favorite illustrations spans two pages.  We see six different pictures of Joey.  He is placed within sections of folded pale blue paper wearing a red and white striped shirt.  In each of these snapshots of him he is at a different stage in folding an origami animal.  It's a marvelous way to show the progression of Joey's skill and the completion of this item.  His actions are precise and his attention is complete.  


More-igami written by Dori Kleber with illustrations by G. Brian Karas is a charming book about working hard to achieve a goal.  When one door is closed, another can open in the most unlikely of places.  A spark becomes a flame and then ignites another.  At the conclusion of the book G. Brian Karas has illustrated the six steps to creating an origami ladybug.
